Calculating VAT — explained briefly

In Net → Gross mode the tax is added on top of the net amount. In Gross → Net mode you remove the VAT from the gross amount: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate).

VAT in Switzerland (MWST) and Germany (USt)

In Switzerland the tax is called Mehrwertsteuer (MWST/VAT): standard rate 8.1%, accommodation 3.8% and reduced 2.6%. In Germany it is legally Umsatzsteuer (USt), on invoices Mehrwertsteuer (VAT): standard rate 19% and reduced 7%. This calculator covers both countries — including the Swiss 5-cent rounding.

Tip: to see how much of a gross salary remains after all deductions, use our net salary calculator for Switzerland, Germany & cross-border commuters.
