Since 1 January 2024, Swiss VAT (MWST) has three rates: the standard rate of 8.1% for most goods and services, the special rate of 3.8% for accommodation services, and the reduced rate of 2.6% for everyday goods such as food, books, newspapers and medication. Certain services — for example education, healthcare and financial services — are exempt from the tax.
For invoices from the years before 2024, the old rates of 7.7%, 3.7% and 2.5% apply. Important in practice: in Switzerland, the final amount is rounded to the nearest 5 Rappen (Rappen rounding).
As a rule, a business is liable for VAT once its annual turnover exceeds CHF 100,000. Below that threshold, registration is voluntary — it is often worthwhile in order to reclaim input tax on investments. For the exact accounting method (effective method or net tax rate), it pays to talk to your fiduciary.
Standard rate 8.1%, special rate for accommodation 3.8%, reduced rate 2.6% for food, books, newspapers and medication. These rates have applied since 1 January 2024.
Divide the gross amount by 1.081. Example: CHF 1,081 gross divided by 1.081 = CHF 1,000 net, the VAT is CHF 81. Our calculator does this automatically in both directions.
In Switzerland, final amounts are rounded to 5 Rappen, as 1 and 2 Rappen coins are no longer in circulation. CHF 10.52 becomes CHF 10.50, CHF 10.53 becomes CHF 10.55.
From CHF 100,000 in taxable annual turnover. Below that, registration is voluntary — it can be worthwhile in order to claim input tax.
